A California community is mourning the loss of a devoted first-grade teacher after an assailant broke into a quiet suburban home.

Sergio Meza Fraire allegedly entered the residence between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. to carry out the brutal stabbing.

Investigators believe the attack was targeted rather than a random act of violence.

Despite the targeted nature of the crime, police state the suspect did not appear to enter the home with the intent to commit theft.

Arti Varma was a cornerstone of Bret Harte Elementary School, where she dedicated her life to educating young children.

Her daughter, Meera, is a known mental health advocate who has participated in high-profile discussions at the White House.

“Arti Varma was a deeply beloved elementary school teacher who was senselessly taken from her family and community in an act of horrific violence,” Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said.

“We will take every necessary step to ensure that the defendant is held accountable for this vicious and unprovoked attack.”

Fraire has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is currently being held without bail.

Prosecutors will decide at a later date whether to pursue the death penalty as the investigation continues.

“It does not appear the suspect entered with the intent to commit theft.”
