• The historic home run came less than two weeks after Smith lost his mother to cancer.
• Smith recorded a rare walk-off grand slam in his first game with a new team.

Dominic Smith displayed incredible resilience Saturday night, making his first appearance for the Atlanta Braves while mourning the recent death of his mother, Yvette LaFleuer.

The veteran slugger came to the plate with the bases loaded in the ninth inning.

He delivered a 6-2 victory with a historic walk-off grand slam.

Smith’s mother passed away earlier this month after a battle with cancer that began last September.

The first baseman said he felt her presence during the high-stakes moment.

It marked a powerful new chapter for his sixth team in four years.

“It’s just amazing,” he told reporters.

“Played against the Braves for a long time, and being on the other side a lot of these endings kind of hurt, so to be on the right side of it this time was so fun.”

The Braves organization provided significant support to Smith throughout spring training as his mother’s health declined.

He spent over a week away from the team to be by her side during a medical crisis before returning to compete for his roster spot.

“This team is just so awesome,” Smith said.

“I’m so blessed because of the love they showed me, the support every day. They’re asking about her, asking about her well-being, my well-being, and that’s all they really cared about. They didn’t care about baseball.”

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Smith is the only player in league history to record a walk-off grand slam in his debut game with a new club.

Prior to joining Atlanta, he spent time with the Mets, Nationals, Red Sox, Reds, and Giants.

Last season, Smith recorded five home runs and 33 RBI during his tenure with San Francisco.

His arrival in Atlanta marks a fresh start for a player who has consistently demonstrated both professional skill and personal strength.
