Democrats Set Sights on Water Heaters in Latest Energy Efficiency Push

Clear Facts:

  • The Biden administration proposes new stringent efficiency requirements for water heaters, raising concerns of growing government overreach.
  • Critics argue that these products already exist in the free market and that consumers should be able to decide whether the upfront cost of these energy-efficient products is worth the potential long-term savings.
  • The new proposal follows the U.S. Energy Department’s recent decision to reinstate a ban on the manufacture and retail sale of most incandescent light bulbs. Critics claim this decision disregards the fact that more energy-efficient choices, such as LED bulbs, were already available to consumers.

The Biden administration, in its quest for environmental reform, is now proposing more stringent efficiency requirements for water heaters, a move that has left conservatives with a sense of growing government overreach.

“Today’s actions — together with our industry partners and stakeholders — improve outdated efficiency standards for common household appliances, which is essential to slashing utility bills for American families and cutting harmful carbon emissions,” said Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm in a statement.

However, the administration’s proposal has been met with criticism and resistance from Republicans.

Forbes contributor David Blackmon noted, “First they came for your gas stoves. Then they came for your dishwashers. Next they came for your water heaters and air conditioners. Now the Biden apparatchiks are coming for your portable gas generators.”

Despite Granholm’s assurance that the new guidelines would save Americans money, critics are skeptical.

“Leave us alone. These products already exist in the free market. Consumers should decide whether the upfront cost of a heat-pump water heater is worth the possible long term savings. In many cases, the monthly savings never make up for the upfront cost of the equipment,” tweeted Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY).

This follows on the heels of the U.S. Energy Department’s move to reinstate a ban on the manufacture and retail sale of most incandescent light bulbs, reversing a 2019 decision by then-President Donald Trump.

The decision was met with disapproval by free market and consumer groups, who argued that more energy efficient choices, such as LED bulbs, were already available to consumers who preferred them.

While the Biden administration continues to couch these regulatory moves under the banner of “Cost-Saving Energy Efficiency Standards”, critics argue that the proposed changes are less about saving costs and more about government control and intervention in the free market.
