The tennis world will crown a new French Open champion this summer following a major withdrawal. Reigning back-to-back champion Carlos Alcaraz announced his absence after medical tests on a wrist injury sustained earlier this month.
“After the results of the tests carried out today, we have decided that the most prudent thing is to be cautious and not participate in Rome and Roland Garros, while we wait to assess the evolution to decide when we will return to the court,” Alcaraz posted to social media.
“It’s a complicated moment for me, but I’m sure we’ll come out stronger from here.”
The No. 2-ranked athlete suffered the injury during the Barcelona Open and subsequently withdrew from the Madrid Open. He recently appeared at the Laureus World Sports Awards with his wrist immobilized to prevent further damage.
Alcaraz started the year in dominant form by defeating Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open final. However, he recently lost the Monte Carlo final and ceded the top world ranking to Jannik Sinner.
Last year’s final between Alcaraz and Sinner was a historic battle lasting five hours and 29 minutes. Alcaraz overcame a two-set deficit in what became the longest final in the history of the tournament.
The rivalry between Alcaraz and Sinner has defined the sport recently, as the pair has won the last nine Grand Slams. This withdrawal ensures a significant shift in the competitive landscape for the upcoming season.
