House Democrats, including The Squad members, arrested at abortion rights rally [Video]
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
- More than a dozen House Democrats were arrested Tuesday at an abortion rights rally.
- U.S. Capitol Police started arresting protestors after they didn’t listen to the three warnings to stop blocking a street in Washington, D.C. near the Supreme Court.
- The 17 Democrats included Cori Bush, Katherine Clark, and the members of The Squad — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib.
A number of House Democrats, including members of “the Squad”, were arrested outside the Supreme Court on Tuesday afternoon for protesting the recent decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
There were 35 arrests made, including 17 lawmakers, according to the Capitol Police.
Among those arrested for blocking traffic were Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and Katherine Clark of Massachusetts. Clark serves as the assistant speaker, the No. 4 position in Democratic leadership.
Other members of “The Squad” arrested were Reps. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts. Other Democrats arrested include Reps. Carolyn Maloney of New York, Cori Bush of Missouri, Veronica Escobar of Texas, Jackie Speier and Barbara Lee of California. They said they were engaging in an act of civil disobedience.
Ocasio-Cortez and Omar tweeted videos of their arrests. “Today I was arrested while participating in a civil disobedience action with my fellow Members of Congress outside the Supreme Court. I will continue to do everything in my power to raise the alarm about the assault on our reproductive rights!” Omar wrote.
Pressley spokesperson Ricardo A. Sánchez said the congresswoman had “joined her colleagues and grassroots advocates for a non-violent civil disobedience to protest the Supreme Court’s cruel and callous decision.”
Capitol Police made the arrests for “crowding, obstructing or incommoding.” The police said, in a series of tweets, that they had issued their standard three warnings to protestors to stop blocking traffic.
“Some of the demonstrators are refusing to get out of the street, so we are starting to make arrests,” Capitol Police said in one of the tweets.
In a statement, Maloney said, “I have the privilege of representing a state where reproductive rights are respected and protected — the least I can do is put my body on the line for the 33 million women at risk of losing their rights.”
Congressional Democrats have held other protests outside the Supreme Court in the weeks since the conservative majority eliminated the constitutional right to an abortion. In late June, Rep. Judy Chu of California, who authored legislation that would codify the Roe v. Wade decision, was among 181 people arrested near the court.
In September, the House passed Chu’s bill but Democrats lack the votes needed to avoid a GOP filibuster in the 50-50 Senate.

Do some journalism!! Report exactly what happened. The Congressional Reps. were not arrested. They were briefly detained and given citations which set a small fine for their illegal actions. Period.
Report on what happened to the other protesters. They are real people as well. Were they actually arrested? Were they cited? What happened. According to your report they just disappeared.
