Authorities in western Kenya discovered a mass grave on Thursday containing the remains of children and adults stuffed into sacks.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations is working to determine if these bodies were legally disposed of by hospital staff.

“We were able to establish that these were bodies transferred from Nyamira District Hospital to a private cemetery in Kericho,” Mohamed Amin, head of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, told reporters.

Kenyan law requires hospitals to obtain court permission before disposing of unclaimed bodies after a 14-day period.

Pathologists are currently conducting autopsies to determine the exact cause of death for each victim.

Local residents expressed deep concern over the secretive nature of the burials and the potential for government involvement.

Former gravediggers reportedly alerted the police after witnessing the suspicious activity at the cemetery site.

“We need authorities to conduct a thorough investigation,” resident Brian Kibunja said.

“Reveal if the government was involved or if a different group of people was behind the mass burial,” resident Samuel Moso added.

This discovery follows a pattern of mass grave incidents in the country, including a 2023 case involving a religious cult in the coastal region.

Human rights advocates have noted a rising number of extrajudicial killings and disappearances over the last year.
