The South Bend Fire Department responded to the blaze just after midnight at the Stadium Flats apartments near S. Lafayette and W. South Street. Fire crews arrived to find towering flames and billowing smoke after receiving reports that the fire had engulfed both the building under construction and a crane on site.

Despite the fire producing significant amounts of embers and debris, firefighters demonstrated exceptional skill in containing the blaze. They successfully prevented it from spreading to the neighboring Diamond View Apartments, which houses 60 units of affordable housing.

Residents of the Diamond View Apartments were evacuated during the emergency response. Officials reported that intense heat from the fire damaged several windows on the building’s top floor, though the structure itself remained intact.

The Stadium Flats building was planned to introduce 92 additional affordable housing units to downtown South Bend. Before the fire, construction was expected to be completed by spring 2027, representing a significant investment in the community’s housing infrastructure.

Both buildings are located near the training facility for the South Bend Cubs, the city’s minor league baseball team. Firefighters successfully stopped the blaze from spreading to the 17,000-square-foot complex, which sits adjacent to the baseball stadium.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by local authorities. No injuries or deaths were reported, a testament to the quick response of emergency personnel and the successful evacuation procedures.

The fire occurred approximately two miles from the University of Notre Dame’s campus. Local officials have not yet released estimates on the total damage or whether construction will resume at the site.
