Clear Facts

  • Donald Trump is considering nominating Florida Governor Ron DeSantis as defense secretary if Pete Hegseth’s confirmation falters.
  • DeSantis, a former rival of Trump, has reconciled with him and supported his campaign during the general election.
  • Hegseth is currently facing allegations of misconduct, which complicates his confirmation process.

In a surprising political development, President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly contemplating a significant change in his administration’s lineup. Multiple sources have confirmed to Fox News that Trump is considering Florida Governor Ron DeSantis as a potential replacement for Pete Hegseth as defense secretary.

DeSantis, once a fierce competitor of Trump during the GOP presidential primaries, has since mended fences with the President-elect. He played a crucial role in fundraising efforts for Trump during the general election.

The Florida governor, who enjoys considerable popularity among conservatives, is a Navy veteran with experience in the Iraq war. Having been re-elected in 2022, DeSantis is term-limited and cannot seek re-election in 2026.

Sources indicate that DeSantis is “very much” in the running to take over from Hegseth, should the need arise. It is reported that Trump himself suggested DeSantis’s name during a meeting in Florida, where they both attended a memorial service for fallen law enforcement officers.

Meanwhile, Hegseth, Trump’s current choice for defense secretary, is facing a challenging confirmation process. Allegations of drinking and sexual misconduct have surfaced against him, although he has firmly denied mistreating women.

“I spoke with the President-elect this morning. He said keep going, keep fighting,” Hegseth stated upon his arrival on Capitol Hill.

“Why would I back down? I have always been a fighter,” he asserted, maintaining his stance.

Despite the allegations, Hegseth continues to make his case, both in person and on social media, emphasizing his commitment to the military over political interests.

However, some of Trump’s allies in the Senate, like Sen. Lindsey Graham, express concern over the allegations. “He obviously has a chance to defend himself here. But some of this stuff is – it’s going to be difficult,” Graham remarked.

Among those Hegseth met with is Sen. Joni Ernst, a military veteran and sexual-assault survivor, whose support is vital for his confirmation. Ernst anticipated a “frank and thorough conversation” with Hegseth.

In a public defense of her son, Penelope Hegseth appeared on Fox and Friends, urging senators, particularly female ones, to listen to her son’s side of the story rather than the media.

If Trump ultimately decides to nominate DeSantis, and the Senate confirms him, Florida would witness a historic transition. Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez would ascend to the governorship, becoming the first female and first Cuban-American to hold the position in the state.
