The Airbus A321 hit an individual who had entered the runway unauthorized around 7 p.m. local time. Following the collision, the aircraft’s right engine ignited in flames, forcing the pilot to immediately abort the takeoff sequence.

“I just see the right wing just on fire,” one passenger told local media outlet Stabroek News.

The pilot successfully brought the aircraft to a stop and returned to the terminal area. All 218 passengers and six crew members evacuated the plane using emergency slides, according to JetBlue officials. No injuries were reported among those aboard the flight.

The pedestrian struck by the aircraft was pronounced dead at the scene. Guyanese authorities have launched an investigation into how the individual gained access to the active runway.

JetBlue released a statement confirming the incident and praising the crew’s response.

“The crew followed all safety protocols, and all customers and crewmembers safely exited the aircraft via slides. We are working closely with local authorities to support the investigation,” the airline stated.

The incident marks a serious breach of airport security protocols. International aviation standards require strict perimeter control and access restrictions to prevent unauthorized individuals from entering operational areas, particularly active runways during aircraft movements.
