The family of Charlie Kirk has issued a statement ahead of preliminary hearings for Tyler Robinson, the man accused of assassinating the Turning Point USA founder, saying the proceedings serve as a “painful reminder of his death.”

Erika Kirk, Charlie’s widow, will attend the hearings alongside his parents Kathy and Rob Kirk throughout the week, according to a source familiar with the situation. The family made clear they will be present only as spectators and will not provide commentary during the legal process.

“Charlie was a beloved husband, son, brother, friend, and father. Every court proceeding serves as a painful reminder of his death and the loss that has irrevocably impacted our lives and the lives of his children,”

the joint statement reads.

“We remain deeply grateful for the support, prayers, and kindness we have received. This outpouring has sustained us during the darkest days of our lives. Out of respect for the judicial process, we will not be commenting further at this time. We ask for continued privacy as we navigate this process and immense grief.”

The Daily Wire has confirmed this will be the only statement the family provides during the preliminary hearing that begins Monday in Provo, Utah.

The five-day hearing takes place roughly 10 months after Charlie Kirk was murdered in front of thousands at a Turning Point USA college campus tour at Utah Valley University. Judge Tony Graf will determine whether prosecutors have sufficient evidence against Robinson, who faces an aggravated murder charge among other offenses, with the death penalty as a possible punishment.

Robinson has not entered a plea.

Utah uses a preliminary hearing process rather than grand jury proceedings, which is why this hearing occurs instead of the case going before a grand jury as typically happens in federal felony cases before trial.

Beginning Monday, the state will present evidence against the 23-year-old accused of shooting Kirk on September 10, 2025. Robinson surrendered after an intensive manhunt.

“The world is going to see what the state has,”

the source familiar with the proceedings said.

Often described as a “mini trial,” this week marks the first time the public will see what evidence prosecutors plan to use in their case. The state will call witnesses and present evidence while the defense cross-examines.

Neither the prosecution nor Robinson’s defense team is required to present all evidence at this stage. The judge will evaluate the evidence through a lens favorable to the state, as required by law.

Prosecutors are expected to play a recorded statement from Lance Twiggs, Robinson’s roommate and lover, during the hearing. It will be Twiggs’ first public statement since authorities say he received Robinson’s confession through text messages and a handwritten letter.

The hearing was originally scheduled for May but was delayed after the defense filed pre-trial motions. The legal maneuvering leading up to Monday’s hearing primarily centered on whether cameras would be allowed in the courtroom.

Judge Graf ruled in favor of the state, allowing cameras in the courtroom, though electronic devices will not be permitted.
