First Lady Melania Trump is celebrating a historic milestone after the first conviction under the Take It Down Act. The Ohio case involved a man accused of using artificial intelligence to terrorize victims with digital forgeries.
James Strahler II of Columbus pleaded guilty to cyberstalking and producing obscene AI visual representations. The 37-year-old was arrested in 2025 after investigators uncovered an extensive network of more than 24 AI platforms used for harassment.
“Today marks the first conviction under the Take It Down Act — protecting victims from non-consensual AI-generated sexually explicit images, cyberstalking, and threats of violence,” Mrs. Trump wrote.
“Thank you U.S. Attorney Dominick S. Gerace II for protecting Americans from cybercrimes in this new digital age.”
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt called the conviction a significant achievement for the First Lady’s advocacy. Mrs. Trump had personally lobbied for the legislation, which requires platforms to remove flagged content within 48 hours.
The Department of Justice said Strahler targeted at least six adult women and multiple minors in his community. He reportedly created more than 700 deepfake images intended to inflict emotional distress on victims and their families.
Strahler now awaits sentencing before U.S. District Court Chief Judge Sarah D. Morrison. The conviction serves as validation for the First Lady’s efforts to secure legal protection through her signature initiative.
