Nation’s Largest Teachers Union Elects Socialist Leader, Votes to Oppose ICE

Clear Facts

  • The National Education Association (NEA), America’s largest teachers union, has elected new leadership with ties to the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA)
  • The union passed resolutions to publish anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) materials and promote gender ideology content
  • Union dues were increased by $10 during the recent convention

The National Education Association is doubling down on left-wing political activism, moving further away from its stated mission of education and deeper into partisan territory. The union’s recent leadership elections and policy votes reveal an organization increasingly aligned with far-left ideology rather than the interests of students, parents, or even many of its own members.

The NEA elected new leadership that includes individuals with documented connections to the Democratic Socialists of America. This marks a significant shift in the union’s public positioning, embracing socialist ideology at the highest levels of leadership.

During the convention, delegates voted to continue publishing and distributing materials opposing Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the federal agency responsible for enforcing immigration law. This resolution commits union resources to political activism against law enforcement agencies tasked with protecting America’s borders and enforcing congressionally-passed immigration statutes.

The union also passed measures supporting the publication and distribution of gender ideology materials. These resources will likely find their way into classrooms across the country, affecting curriculum and educational content in communities where parents may have little say in what their children are taught.

Adding financial burden to teachers already struggling with inflation, the NEA raised member dues by $10. This increase will fund the union’s expanded political activities, including the newly reinforced opposition to federal immigration enforcement and the promotion of progressive social policies.

The NEA represents approximately three million educators across the United States. Its political positions and activism directly influence educational policy, curriculum decisions, and classroom instruction in schools nationwide.

Critics argue that teachers unions have strayed far from their original purpose of advocating for educator working conditions and student success. Instead, they have become vehicles for progressive political activism, often at odds with the values of the communities they serve.

Parents and taxpayers who fund public education through their tax dollars have limited recourse when powerful unions push political agendas through schools. Many states prohibit teachers from opting out of union representation even when they disagree with the union’s political stances.

The embrace of socialist leadership and anti-law enforcement positions represents a clear signal about the NEA’s priorities. Education appears to take a back seat to political activism in the nation’s most influential teachers organization.
