The Los Angeles Rams are planning for the future after selecting former Alabama standout Ty Simpson in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft. Despite the move, 38-year-old veteran Matthew Stafford remains the centerpiece of the franchise.
Stafford’s wife, Kelly, reached out to the young quarterback shortly after the selection. Simpson revealed the gesture during his introductory press conference.
“Kelly has actually texted me on Instagram and welcomed me and told me to hit her up if we need anything,” Simpson said.
“But I can’t wait to talk to Matthew. I’m super ecstatic because I just want to pick his brain.”
Simpson enters the NFL after a productive career at Alabama, where he recorded 3,567 passing yards and 28 touchdowns during his final collegiate season. His arrival sparked immediate conversation regarding Stafford’s tenure with the team.
Rams head coach Sean McVay addressed the speculation surrounding the depth chart. He emphasized that the draft pick serves to strengthen the roster rather than create a competition for the starting role.
“There were a lot of players that we liked, but when you do look at it, I think the thing you liked about the body of work is … let’s make one thing clear, this is Matthew’s team,” McVay said.
“You get a chance to be able to address the backup quarterback.”
Simpson’s father is the head coach at UT Martin, and his parents previously met with Rams leadership during the most recent Rose Bowl. The young passer is expected to learn under the guidance of the veteran champion as he begins his professional journey.
