Los Angeles Councilwoman Nithya Raman, a Democratic Socialists of America member, led the opposition against a safety measure aimed at clearing a notorious homeless camp.
The area has been a flashpoint for crime, leaving local residents fearing for their lives as the city struggles with a massive surge in homelessness.
One resident described the deteriorating situation to local reporters, highlighting the immediate danger present in the neighborhood.
“It was absolutely crazy. I watched a guy get shot and killed across the street,” the resident stated.
Mayor Karen Bass’ office criticized Raman for the vote, noting that the councilwoman has a history of opposing laws that prohibit encampments near schools.
This latest move comes as Raman prepares to challenge Bass for the mayoral seat.
“These are individuals that have been offered alternatives again and again and again and are choosing to remain encamped on our streets,” Councilwoman Traci Park said.
Despite the billions of dollars allocated to housing programs, California’s homeless population has swelled by 60 percent since 2015.
Raman argued that existing regulations are sufficient, though critics contend her approach merely allows lawlessness to persist in residential zones.
“This part of 41.18 duplicates laws we already have to regulate camping and, at best, succeeds in moving homelessness around a neighborhood,” Raman claimed.
While Raman continues to prioritize socialist policy over immediate enforcement, the majority of the City Council moved forward with the cleanup.
Residents remain frustrated as they wait for the city to restore order to their streets.
