President Donald Trump has made a significant nomination by selecting Retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Dan “Razin'” Caine to head the Joint Chiefs of Staff. This decision places Caine in line to replace Air Force Gen. Charles Q. Brown, pending Senate confirmation.
Caine’s journey through the military ranks is nothing short of impressive. His career began with the Air National Guard, flying with the 138th fighter squadron in Syracuse before transferring to Andrews Air Force Base. His dedication and pursuit of excellence have been consistently noted by those who have worked alongside him.
Retired Col. Gary Atkin, Caine’s former flight instructor, remarked on his relentless drive:
“He always kept striving for more and striving for perfection.”
Caine’s military service is marked by notable achievements, including two deployments to Iraq and a pivotal role in the early days of Operation Iraqi Freedom. During a complex mission targeting “SCUD” missile sites, Caine’s expertise shone through. James Rennan, a former pilot, recounted:
“Although most of us were proficient F-16 pilots, very few guys have the discipline to be the resident expert, and it became evident Raisin’ was the smartest guy in the room.”
In Trump’s first term, Caine played a crucial role as the commanding general of U.S. Central Command Special Operations Component in Iraq. Trump praised him as a “warfighter” who was “instrumental in the complete annihilation of the ISIS caliphate.”
Caine’s ability to forge relationships with special forces operatives further highlights his unique approach. A former senior defense official noted:
“I mean as an F-16 pilot…’Razin’ took it upon himself to go down there and talk to them and really get himself trusted and immersed into the SOF community.”
This unconventional path through the Air National Guard has provided Caine with a distinctive perspective, making him a fitting choice for the role. His background and experiences set him apart from others who have held the position.
As Trump moves forward with this nomination, Caine’s leadership and expertise are expected to bring a fresh perspective to America’s highest military office.
