Trump Revokes Endorsement Over Tariff Stance

Clear Facts

  • President Donald Trump withdrew his endorsement of Rep. Jeff Hurd, R-Colo., citing lack of support for his tariff policies.
  • The move followed a Supreme Court decision limiting presidential authority on tariffs and Hurd’s public support for congressional control over trade decisions.
  • Trump endorsed Hope Scheppelman, a Navy veteran and nurse practitioner, as his replacement for Hurd in Congress.

President Trump announced on Saturday that he is no longer supporting Congressman Jeff Hurd, R-Colo., after Hurd questioned Trump’s approach to tariffs and supported congressional authority over trade policy.

This decision comes just after the Supreme Court restricted the president’s use of tariffs, prompting Hurd to reaffirm Congress’s constitutional power over trade issues.

“Based on a lack of support, in particular for the unbelievably successful TARIFFS imposed on Foreign Countries and Companies which has made America Richer, Stronger, Bigger, and Better than ever before, I am hereby WITHDRAWING my Endorsement of RINO Congressman Jeff Hurd, of Colorado’s 3rd District, and fully Endorsing Highly Respected Patriot, Hope Scheppelman, to take his place in Congress,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Hurd posted on Friday, “Article I assigns Congress the authority to regulate commerce with foreign nations and to impose tariffs. Major trade decisions should rest on clear statutory authority, not expansive emergency interpretations.”

He added, “Strong trade enforcement must be grounded in durable legal footing.”

Trump emphasized that rarely does he withdraw an endorsement, stating that he had only done so once before.

In a further statement, Trump criticized Hurd for prioritizing foreign interests, saying Hurd was “more interested in protecting Foreign Countries that have been ripping us off for decades than he is the United States of America.”

Hurd responded that congressional debate and direct voting should determine if tariffs are necessary: “If tariffs are necessary, Congress should debate them and vote on them directly. That is how our constitutional system is designed to function.”

Trump also announced an increase in the global tariff rate from 10% to 15%, following the Supreme Court’s 6-3 ruling related to the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.

He called the Court’s decision “deeply disappointing,” and expressed being “ashamed” of some justices involved.

Trump praised Hope Scheppelman as a “distinguished Critical Care Nurse Practitioner, and a brave U.S. Navy Veteran, who knows the America First Policies required… unlike RINO Jeff Hurd, HOPE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!”

Rep. Hurd has not yet responded to the development.

Stay tuned for updates on this important shift within the GOP and its approach to trade and tariffs.

The people who keep claiming Congress should decide about Tariffs Keep Leaving Out the part about Congress NEVER Doing Anything. They Can’t Even do the Simplist of Actions much less do anything with tariffs. If it’s left up to Congress then America Will Be Taken Advantage of Like We Had Been Before Trump Did Something About It. If it’s left up to Congress, America will have Extremely High Tariffs Against Her and Have Absolutely No Tariffs on Foreign Countries. You know, like it has been for so long now.
