In a significant move, President-elect Trump has chosen Rep. Mike Waltz, R-Fla., to become the National Security Adviser. Waltz, who has a distinguished military background, is set to bring his extensive experience to the forefront of national security issues.
“Mike is the first Green Beret to have been elected to Congress, and previously served in the White House and Pentagon,” Trump stated. His military career spans 27 years in the Army Special Forces, during which he was deployed multiple times and awarded four Bronze Stars, two of which were with Valor.
Waltz’s appointment places him at the center of numerous national security challenges. These include managing U.S. weapons supplies to Ukraine, addressing the growing alliance between Russia and North Korea, and dealing with ongoing Middle East tensions involving Iran proxies and the Israel-Hamas-Hezbollah conflict.
A three-term congressman from Florida, Waltz has been a prominent figure in national security discussions. He serves on several key committees, including the House Armed Services Committee, the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.
Trump highlighted Waltz’s credentials, noting that he is “a nationally recognized leader in National Security, a bestselling author, and an expert on the threats posed by China, Russia, Iran, and global terrorism.” Waltz’s alignment with Trump’s “America First Foreign Policy agenda” is expected to bolster efforts toward achieving “Peace through Strength.”
Waltz has been vocal about his concerns regarding China, advocating for a U.S. boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. His stance is driven by China’s role in the COVID-19 pandemic and its treatment of the Uighur population.
Additionally, Waltz has been a critic of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, calling for accountability for the deaths of 13 U.S. service members and the abandonment of Americans and allies. He has echoed Trump’s criticisms of a “woke” military, emphasizing the need to focus on military readiness over diversity initiatives.
“As head of the readiness subcommittee, I am ready to get to work to better equip our military and turn our focus away from woke priorities and back to winning wars,” Waltz previously stated. His commitment to national security is evident in his readiness to address these pressing issues.
