Biden’s New Strategist Faces Critical Challenge

Clear Facts

  • Joe Biden has hired Democratic strategist Chris Meagher to enhance his public image amid the impending release of his interview with former special counsel Robert Hur.
  • Robert Hur, appointed by former Attorney General Merrick Garland, investigated Biden’s handling of classified documents but did not pursue criminal charges.
  • Meagher has previously worked with prominent Democrats and is now defending Biden’s political record and mental acuity.

In a strategic move, Joe Biden has brought on board Chris Meagher, a seasoned Democratic strategist, as preparations are made to release a potentially damaging interview. This interview, conducted by former special counsel Robert Hur, includes remarks suggesting Biden has a “poor memory.”

Meagher, who has a history of serving in key roles such as Biden’s deputy press secretary and spokesman for the Defense Department, is tasked with defending Biden’s political legacy. This development comes at a critical time as plans are underway to unveil the audio of Biden’s October 2023 interview with Hur.

Robert Hur, appointed by Merrick Garland in 2023, looked into Biden’s management of classified documents. Despite finding that Biden had willfully retained sensitive documents, Hur decided against pursuing any criminal charges. In his February 2024 report, Hur described Biden as “a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”

Meagher’s experience extends to working with figures like Pete Buttigieg and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, as well as the Democratic National Committee. His current role involves facilitating Biden’s media appearances, including an upcoming joint interview with Jill Biden.

An anonymous Democratic operative expressed a sentiment shared by some within the party:
“There are a lot of young and dynamic leaders in the Democratic Party who are focused on the path forward, and it’s better we focus on them, instead of an old man trying to convince himself and America he isn’t responsible for Donald Trump’s reelection.”

Biden, in a recent interview, highlighted his administration’s successes and the difficult decision to step back from a 2024 reelection bid. Despite concerns raised by some Democrats regarding his mental acuity, especially after a challenging debate performance in June 2024, Meagher continues to stand by Biden.

“Yes, Biden was old, but that’s a lot different than an allegation of mental decline that kept him from being able to do the job, which there is no evidence of,” Meagher asserted in a post on April 27.

Efforts to reach Meagher for further comment were unsuccessful.
