Attorney General Pam Bondi did not hold back in her response to Democratic Senator Jack Reed of Rhode Island, who accused her of inaction in stopping Mexican gangs from obtaining American weapons.
During a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing, Bondi highlighted the Trump administration’s achievements, pointing out that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has prevented nearly 9,700 firearms from reaching dangerous individuals in Mexico since President Trump took office again.
Senator Reed questioned Bondi, asking, “What are we doing to stop American weapons going to Mexico to arm their gangs?” Bondi countered by stating, “We are arresting people who have illegal firearms in our country. We’re not sending people back to Mexico with guns. We’re throwing them in our jails and prosecuting them.”
Reed, however, was not convinced, arguing that these gangs have transformed into military organizations using American weapons and technology. He claimed, “Most of these gangs have completely turned themselves into military organizations because they’re using American weapons, American technology, and your argument is that, well, we’re not doing anything about them.”
Bondi refuted Reed’s assertions, criticizing the previous border policies. She remarked, “No, not my argument. That was the policy of the last four years with open borders. You could come back and forth across our borders. You could buy guns. You could take guns off the street.”
She further emphasized the current administration’s efforts, stating, “Our borders are closed. We are arresting illegal cartels. Sinaloa from Mexico, MS-13 from El Salvador, TdA [Tren de Aragua]. We are arresting from Venezuela.” Bondi also noted that the ATF has seized over 14,600 guns since Trump resumed office, marking a 33% increase from the previous administration.
Despite Bondi’s defense, Reed maintained his stance, asserting that she has not effectively addressed the issue. “I don’t think you’ve done anything to severely interrupt the arming of Mexican gangs because that’s really not what your focus — and I think your focus should be on that,” he said.
The discussion highlights the ongoing debate over border security and the measures taken to prevent illegal activities. The U.S. Border Patrol’s report of zero illegal migrants released into the nation during May underscores the administration’s commitment to tightening border security, contrasting sharply with the previous administration’s record.
