Brewers Win Game 1 on Controversial Roof-Ruling Play

Clear Facts
- The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the San Diego Padres 3-2 in Game 1 of the National League Division Series on Saturday night.
- A potential go-ahead home run by San Diego’s Ty France struck a roof truss above fair territory and was caught for an out by Milwaukee’s Jackson Chourio.
- The controversial ruling stood after video review, preserving the Brewers’ one-run lead and series advantage.
The best-of-five NLDS between the Milwaukee Brewers and San Diego Padres delivered exactly what fans expected from two strong clubs. Milwaukee entered as the top team in baseball, while the Padres surged late and swept Chicago in the Wild Card round.
Presumptive NL Cy Young favorite Jacob Misiorowski started for the Brewers in his first postseason outing. Left-hander Robbie Ray took the mound for San Diego.
“The best team in baseball this season” faced a Padres lineup that opened scoring in the second inning when DH Luis Campusano singled in a run.
San Diego added another run on a fielder’s choice to lead 2-0. Milwaukee answered in the third when Jackson Chourio hit the hardest home run of his career, a two-run shot that tied the game.
“Misiorowski set the tone early, striking out Padres star and lead-off hitter Fernando Tatis Jr.”
The right-hander exited after four innings, allowing six hits and two runs while striking out six. The game stayed tied through six innings.
“The Brewers got on the board thanks to a Jackson Chourio two-run shot, which happened to be the hardest-hit homer of his career.”
Milwaukee took the lead in the seventh when catcher William Contreras launched a solo home run, his second hit of the season against San Diego pitching.
“That solo home run was just Contreras’ second hit all season against San Diego pitching.”
In the top of the ninth, Padres first baseman Ty France drove a ball deep to right-center field. The ball struck a roof truss in fair territory and dropped straight down.
“The ball hit one of the trusses in the stadium’s roof. The ball then bounced nearly straight down and was caught by Jackson Chourio.”
Chourio tracked the ball and caught it for the second out. The Padres challenged the call, but the ruling stood.
“The rule is that if the ball hits the roof in fair territory, it’s still live.”
Jackson Merrill lined out to right field to end the game. Game 2 is scheduled for Sunday afternoon in Milwaukee on FS1.
