The Los Angeles Dodgers opened their bid for a third consecutive World Series championship with a 5-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves in Game 1 of the National League Division Series. Starting pitcher Tarik Skubal set the tone with a dominant performance that limited Atlanta to a single run through six innings.
Braves manager Walt Weiss turned to a bullpen game after an early exit for starter Dylan Dodd. The decision proved costly in the fourth inning when Victor Mederos surrendered a two-run blast to left fielder Teoscar Hernández.
“The ball came off Hernández’s bat at 109.9 mph as he demolished it 431 feet into the left-field bleachers, giving the Dodgers a 2-0 lead.”
Right fielder Kyle Tucker extended the advantage in the sixth with a 408-foot home run off reliever A.J. Smith-Shawver. Third baseman Max Muncy followed two batters later with a solo shot that pushed the lead to 5-1.
Skubal retired fifteen straight hitters after the first inning before catcher Sean Murphy connected for a 421-foot solo homer in the sixth. Atlanta threatened again in the ninth when second baseman Ozzie Albies hit a two-run shot, but the rally ended with a groundout to second baseman Mookie Betts.
“Phillips first walked Mauricio Dubón, sending up Austin Riley as the tying run, but got the Braves third baseman to ground out to Betts to close it out.”
The Dodgers will look to extend their series advantage when they host the Braves again on Sunday afternoon.
