Chili’s Clashes with Ruth’s Chris Over Dress Code Controversy

Clear Facts
- Chili’s publicly criticized Ruth’s Chris Steak House for its strict business casual dress code policies.
- The Ruth’s Chris policy bans gym wear, tank tops, and hats from the main dining room.
- Chili’s responded by stating their only requirement is that customers must be dressed to enter.
The casual dining giant Chili’s sparked a viral debate after mocking the restrictive dress code standards enforced by Ruth’s Chris Steak House. The exchange started on social media when critics highlighted the steakhouse’s requirement for guests to remove hats or sit at the bar.
“The only dress code at Chili’s is that you have to be dressed,” the company wrote.
The response garnered over one million views as social media users debated the necessity of formal standards in modern dining. While some praised the relaxed environment of casual chains, others defended the right of high-end establishments to maintain a specific atmosphere for date nights and special occasions.
Ruth’s Chris, owned by Darden Restaurants, enforces rules against revealing clothing, exposed undergarments, and attire featuring offensive graphics. Those failing to meet these standards are typically redirected to the lounge or bar areas rather than the main dining room.
“I’d rather go to Chili’s,” one social media user wrote in support of the more relaxed approach.
“Chili’s is not fine dining,” another commenter countered, arguing that classier venues should preserve a formal ambiance for their patrons. The debate continues to divide diners who value comfort versus those who prefer traditional standards of etiquette in upscale spaces.

They are two entirely different types of restaurants and each have the right to have whatever dress code they want. If you want to go out for a nice casual meal then go to Chili’s. But if you want to get dressed up and go out for a more expensive high end meal then go somewhere like Ruth’s Chris.

The biggest part of “our freedom” in America is we think “our freedom” means “my freedom”. It should freedom for everyone. Businesses need to have the same freedom as individuals. They should be able to have guidelines for their cliental. If it hurts their business, that’s their business. Don’t patronize there if you don’t like their guidelines. There are plenty of other places to eat.

I totally agree with Ruth Chris. Just bc you CAN wear your pajamas when you go out to eat, doesn’t mean you SHOULD! Yes, people have rights. Doesn’t mean they have manners though. Like the man said, your rights end where mine begin. Grow up and learn some manners!
