Clear Facts

  • Senators Martin Heinrich and John Fetterman were the only Democrats to vote for advancing Markwayne Mullin’s nomination.
  • Heinrich justified his vote by citing a productive working relationship with Mullin on previous tribal and legislative bills.
  • The Department of Homeland Security currently faces severe funding issues and staffing shortages across major American airports.

Democratic Senators Martin Heinrich and John Fetterman broke party lines to advance the confirmation of President Trump’s nominee for DHS Secretary.

Their support moves Senator Markwayne Mullin toward a final confirmation vote to replace former Secretary Kristi Noem.

Heinrich defended his decision by highlighting his personal friendship and history of legislative cooperation with the Oklahoma Republican.

He expressed hope for a more constructive relationship with the agency regarding border security and judicial warrants.

“This is going to surprise some people, but I consider Markwayne Mullin a friend. We have a very honest and constructive working relationship.”

“I have also seen first-hand that Markwayne is not someone who can simply be bullied into changing his views, and I look forward to having a Secretary who doesn’t take their orders from Stephen Miller.”

Heinrich stated the remarks while explaining his vote.

The move sparked immediate backlash from far-left activists who questioned Mullin’s qualifications for the role.

Despite the criticism, Heinrich maintained that a change in leadership is necessary for effective southwest border management.

Senator John Fetterman also confirmed his support for Mullin, noting that the nation needs functional leadership at the department.

This comes as the DHS struggles with underfunding and high resignation rates among TSA personnel.

“My AYE is rooted in a strong committed, constructive working relationship with Senator Mullin for our nation’s security,” Fetterman added.

The Department of Homeland Security remains a focal point of debate as lawmakers negotiate funding and immigration enforcement changes.

These confirmation votes signal a rare moment of bipartisan cooperation in an otherwise divided Senate session.
