Prime Minister Viktor Orban called an emergency defense council meeting Sunday following a serious security breach involving regional energy infrastructure.
Powerful explosives were discovered near a pipeline in Serbia that serves as a vital energy artery for Hungary.
The discovery occurred outside the town of Kanjiza, located near the Hungarian border.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic personally informed Orban of the situation as investigations into the threat began.
“Our units found an explosive of devastating power,” Vucic said in a post on Instagram.
“I told PM Orban that we would keep him updated on the investigation,” Vucic added.
The incident arrives at a sensitive time as Hungary prepares for national elections.
Orban suggested the discovery indicates a prepared act of sabotage intended to disrupt domestic energy security.
“According to information that we have….there was an act of sabotage prepared,” Orban said after the defense meeting.
“Ukraine has been for years trying to cut off Europe from Russian energy,” he added.
Both countries have increased protection around the site.
Djuro Jusic, head of Serbia’s Military Intelligence Agency, stated the explosives found on the Turkstream system were produced in the United States.
He noted evidence suggested an individual from a migrant community with military training was likely involved.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto pointed toward recent hostility from Kyiv regarding energy supplies.
He noted that previous attempts had been made to place Hungary under total energy blockades.
“In the past few days and weeks, the Ukrainians organised an oil blockade against us, and then tried to put us under a total energy blockade … And now we have today’s incident,” Szijjarto wrote.
International observers and opposition figures have raised questions about the timing of the event.
However, the Hungarian government remains focused on securing critical infrastructure against further foreign interference.
