The ambassador’s remarks reflect a realistic appraisal of Lebanon’s internal political situation. Danon emphasized the need to be “realistic that the government of” Lebanon lacks the capacity or will to fully control Hezbollah’s operations within its borders.

Hezbollah, designated as a terrorist organization by the United States and other Western nations, has long operated as a state within a state in Lebanon. The group maintains its own military apparatus, estimated to possess more than 100,000 rockets and missiles aimed at Israeli territory.

The Lebanese government’s inability to exert sovereignty over all of its territory has been a persistent challenge for regional stability. Iran continues to supply Hezbollah with financial support, weapons, and training, enabling the organization to maintain its threatening posture toward Israel.

Ambassador Danon’s comments come at a time of heightened tensions in the Middle East, with Israel maintaining vigilance against multiple threats from Iranian proxies operating in Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza. The IDF has conducted numerous operations to prevent weapons transfers and disrupt terrorist infrastructure in the region.
