Nancy Pelosi to visit Taiwan despite China’s warning

- “China would respond with resolute and forceful measures, and all ensuing consequences would be borne solely by the U.S.,” a Chinese official said.
China warned Tuesday it would take “forceful measures” if House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan in August, according to a report from the Financial Times. It will be the first Taiwan visit for a U.S. House speaker in 25 years since Newt Gingrich’s in 1997.
The report added that Pelosi and her delegation will also go to other Southeast Asian countries, including Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia and Singapore.
The trip, which was initially scheduled in April, was canceled after Pelosi tested positive for Covid-19. The visit comes amid increased tensions between Washington and Beijing over Taiwan.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin condemned an “unsafe” and “unprofessional” interaction between a Chinese fighter jet and a U.S. special operations C-130 aircraft in June. Chinese water and aircraft have repeatedly buzzed the U.S. and allied aircraft over the East and South China Seas in recent months.
“We’ve seen an alarming increase in the number of unsafe aerial intercepts and confrontations at sea by [People’s Liberation Army] aircraft and vessels,” Austin said at the time. “This should worry us all.”
In February, President Joe Biden sent a delegation of former U.S. officials to Taiwan, including retired Adm. Mike Mullen, a former chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Michele Flournoy, who served as undersecretary of defense for policy in the Obama administration. It was a sign of support for the island claimed by China after Russia launched an invasion of Ukraine.
Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited Taiwan in March while former Defense Secretary Mark Esper arrived in Taiwan on Monday for a visit.
China warned in April amid media reports of the original trip that Pelosi’s visit would seriously impact Chinese-U.S. relations.
“It would bring serious damage to the foundation of China-U.S. relations, and would send the wrong messages to the Taiwan secessionists,” said Zhao Lijian, spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the time.
“China would respond with resolute and forceful measures, and all ensuing consequences would be borne solely by the U.S.,” Zhao added.
China claims Taiwan is part of its territory and often opposes Washington’s support for Taipei. Although the U.S. does not have formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, Washington has long supported the island’s self-defense capability with arms sales and a close military relationship, as laid out in the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979.
