NYC: Illegal migrants sleep outside hotel to protest move to relief center [Video]

Illegal migrants who were initially provided free hotel accommodations in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, refused to vacate their rooms for a migrant shelter in Brooklyn, staging protests outside the hotel.

The Watson Hotel originally housed the migrants, but they were scheduled for relocation to a new migrant relief center in the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal over the weekend.

Mayor Eric Adams (D) said that the city “began the process of moving single adult men from the Watson Hotel to Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, as we transition the hotel to meet the large number of asylum-seeking families with children.”

Some migrants left for the shelter, but many of them immediately returned to the Watson Hotel. They claimed that the facility did not have heat or enough bathroom space. Some refused to vacate the hotel altogether. Those who refused to comply staged protests and spent the night on the street outside the hotel.

The city refuted these claims, stating, “The facilities at Brooklyn Cruise Terminal will provide the same services as every other humanitarian relief center in the city, and the scheduled relocations to Brooklyn Cruise Terminal this weekend took place as planned.”

Officials prepared the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Center after Adams said that the city has reached “its breaking point.”

The center is set to be closed this spring ahead of cruise season to “provide adult men with a place to stay, access support, and get to their final destination.”

Adams insisted that the facilities were hospitable accommodations. He also sounded the alarm for emergency support from the state and federal governments amid the ongoing migrant crisis in the city.

The mayor stated, “More than 42,000 asylum seekers have arrived in New York City since last spring, and we continue to surpass our moral obligations as we provide asylum seekers with shelter, food, health care, education, and a host of other services.”

Adams declared a “national crisis” involving the migrant surge during a recent visit to El Paso, Texas.

The mayor reported that one week in January saw a daily average of 400 people entering New York City, with one day seeing a record 835 entries.
