A deadly overnight crash at one of Portland’s most prestigious social clubs has turned into a major federal investigation after authorities discovered possible explosive devices inside the vehicle.

Portland Fire and Rescue responded just before 2:50 a.m. local time Saturday to reports that a vehicle had crashed through the front entrance of the Multnomah Athletic Club and caught fire, according to the Portland Police Bureau.

After firefighters controlled the blaze, one person was found dead inside the car. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased driver.

The investigation took a serious turn when the Portland Police Bureau’s Explosive Disposal Unit was called to the scene after evidence of an explosive device was discovered in the vehicle. The explosives unit is currently assisting with the investigation and conducting a thorough assessment of the scene.

The Portland FBI Office has also responded to the incident, elevating concerns about the nature of the crash. Multiple nearby streets remain closed as investigators work to determine what happened.

Police have asked the community to avoid the area while the investigation continues.

In a Facebook post, the Multnomah Athletic Club announced it would remain closed until further notice, describing the incident as “serious.”

“At this time, we do not have a timeline for reopening, but we’re expecting a prolonged close,” club leadership wrote.

“Our priority is ensuring the club is safe before welcoming our community back.”

The Multnomah Athletic Club, founded in 1891, is one of Portland’s oldest and most exclusive private social and athletic clubs. The club’s downtown location has long been a fixture of the city’s cultural landscape.

Authorities have not disclosed whether they believe the crash was intentional or accidental, and the investigation remains active. The presence of explosive materials has raised questions about the driver’s intentions and whether the incident could be connected to any broader security concerns.
