WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • At least 15 people, including seven children, were killed after a gunman opened fire at a school in Russia on Monday morning.
  • The shooter, who also shot himself, has also wounded 14 children and 7 adults.
  • A Kremlin spokesman called the shooting “a terrorist act.”

Fifteen people, including seven children, were killed after a gunman opened fire in a school in central Russia on Monday. The shooter with a swastika symbol on his shirt also wounded 24 others before shooting himself, investigators said.

The shooting incident took place in School No. 88 in Izhevsk, a city of 640,000 residents. It’s located about 600 miles east of Moscow in the Udmurtia region and west of the Ural mountains, according to Russia’s Investigative Committee.

In a video statement, Gov. Alexander Brechalov of Udmurtia confirmed that the gunman committed suicide.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskovand condemned the shooting, calling it “a terrorist act.” He said that Russian President Vladimir Putin has made all the necessary orders to the relevant authorities.

“President Putin deeply mourns deaths of people and children in the school, where a terrorist act took place,” Peskov told the press.

The school, which offers education to children between grades 1 and 11, has been evacuated and locked down, the governor added.

The Investigative Committee identified the shooter as Artyom Kazantsev, 34. Though no details about his motives have been released, reports say he was a former student of the school and that he was wearing a black t-shirt bearing “Nazi symbols.”

Russia’s National Guard said the suspect used two non-lethal handguns that can fire real bullets.

A criminal investigation into the incident has been launched on charges of multiple murders and illegal possession of firearms.
