Austrian police reported a fatal collision involving a local train and a car at the crossing early Thursday. While law enforcement did not immediately identify the victim, multiple professional soccer clubs where Manninger played released statements confirming his death.
“Everyone at Arsenal is shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic passing of former goalkeeper, Alex Manninger,” the team’s statement read.
“All our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this incredibly sad time. Rest in peace, Alex.”
According to the police report, emergency responders arrived to find the 48-year-old Salzburg resident already freed from his vehicle by first responders. CPR was immediately administered, with police assisting in resuscitation efforts including the use of a defibrillator.
“Despite further efforts by paramedics and an emergency physician, resuscitation was unsuccessful,” police stated.
“The man from Salzburg succumbed to his injuries.”
Authorities said the car was struck and dragged by the train. The specific circumstances leading to the fatal collision remain under investigation. No other injuries were reported.
News of Manninger’s death sent shockwaves through the international soccer community, with tributes pouring in from clubs across Europe.
