  • A 25-year-old Venezuelan immigrant is charged in the murder of a Chicago college student.
  • The suspect was released into the United States in May 2023 under the Biden administration.
  • Authorities say the suspect had prior local charges but remained in the country.

President Donald Trump criticized the Biden administration’s border policies following the death of 18-year-old Sheridan Gorman. The Loyola University Chicago student was fatally shot while watching the Northern Lights near a lakefront pier.

Police arrested Jose Medina-Medina, an illegal immigrant who entered the country last year, for the unprovoked attack. Trump said the administration’s open-door approach allowed dangerous individuals into American communities.

“It’s devastating. These people were let in by Biden. We’re getting them out. We’re getting them out fast. That’s why ICE is so important,” Trump stated during a press briefing.

“This animal, I saw the whole thing last night. They gave me a briefing,” he added.

Medina-Medina had prior shoplifting charges but was released by local officials before the fatal shooting. Trump said these policies have damaged the nation and vowed to continue large-scale deportations.

“This person came in through the open-door policy of Joe Biden. We’re taking them out by the tens of thousands. We’re doing a great job. It’s a shame. They’ve hurt our country,” Trump said.

Gorman’s family rejected claims by local politicians that she was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. They said she was in a safe area near her dorm and blamed systemic failures for her death.

“We are gravely disappointed by the policies and failures that allowed this individual to remain in a position to commit this crime,” the family said.

“The loss of a daughter. The loss of a sister. The loss of a future filled with milestones that will now never come. Our family is forever changed,” they added.

The Department of Homeland Security has urged Chicago officials to keep the suspect in custody. Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis called on sanctuary city politicians to stop releasing criminal illegal aliens back into neighborhoods.

Medina-Medina faces charges including first-degree murder and aggravated assault but remained hospitalized during his scheduled court appearance.

The case highlights ongoing concerns about public safety and federal immigration enforcement failures.
