Trump Says Iran Strike Pause Opens Door to Ceasefire

Clear Facts

  • President Donald Trump announced a two-week ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran on Tuesday evening.
  • The deal ensures the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz for international petroleum shipments.
  • The pause in hostilities allows for the finalization of a 10-point peace proposal brokered by Pakistan.

The agreement was secured just two hours before a U.S. deadline that would have initiated strikes on Iranian infrastructure. President Trump said the War Department was prepared to carry out the missions after 8 p.m. ET.

Trump described the arrangement as a double-sided ceasefire. He said the planned destructive force in the region would be held back after negotiations involving high-level Pakistani leadership.

“Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, of Pakistan, and wherein they requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran, and subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks,” Trump wrote.

“This will be a double-sided CEASEFIRE! The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning long-term peace with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East.”

While the terms of the peace deal remain private, the shift marks a significant de-escalation in Middle Eastern tensions. The administration says its primary military objectives have already been achieved during this cycle of conflict.
