Clear Facts

  • The International Union of Operating Engineers Local 825 endorsed Republican Jack Ciattarelli for New Jersey governor, breaking from its previous support for Democrats.
  • The union criticized the state’s current Democratic leadership for high energy costs and an ineffective green agenda.
  • Energy policy is a major issue in the upcoming governor’s race, with Ciattarelli advocating for natural gas infrastructure and Sherrill supporting renewable energy projects.

In a surprising move, the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 825 has thrown its weight behind Republican Jack Ciattarelli in the New Jersey governor’s race. This endorsement marks a significant departure from the union’s previous alignment with Democratic candidates, highlighting growing dissatisfaction with the current administration’s policies.

Greg Lalevee, the union’s business manager, expressed the union’s concerns, stating that New Jersey is grappling with “an energy crisis, an affordability crisis and a crisis of common sense.” He emphasized the need for leadership that will address these challenges without succumbing to extreme political pressures.

The endorsement serves as a critique of the state’s faltering green energy initiatives, particularly the failed “Ocean Wind” projects, which were abandoned due to financial issues. Ciattarelli’s campaign welcomed the endorsement, declaring, “This endorsement shows that the working men and women of New Jersey want a return to common sense government.”

This shift in support is particularly notable given that Local 825 previously backed Democrat Phil Murphy in 2021. Lalevee cited frustration with the state Board of Public Utilities for its slow progress on essential infrastructure projects, such as pipeline replacements. He also criticized environmental groups for pressuring lawmakers without offering practical solutions.

Energy policy is emerging as a pivotal issue in the upcoming gubernatorial race. While Democratic candidate Mikie Sherrill advocates for a swift transition to renewable energy sources, Ciattarelli is promoting a more balanced approach. He aims to enhance natural gas infrastructure and expedite development, stating, “I’ll end Murphy’s radical energy agenda that’s driving up our electric bills in New Jersey.”

The Ciattarelli campaign’s internal polling from mid-June indicated a tight race, with Ciattarelli trailing Sherrill by just 3 points. As the election approaches, the endorsement from Local 825 underscores a potential shift in union support, which could influence the outcome in a state where unions have traditionally backed Democrats.
