The Skinny:

  • Former Giants running back, Tiki Barber, said on “Tiki & Tierney” that the Aaron Rodgers to 49ers rumors have “some validity”
  • 49ers do not have a first or second-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, but own three third-round picks
  • Rodgers, 39, remains a member of the Packers despite stating in March how he intends to play for the Jets in 2023

UPDATE: “The Jets agreed to a trade with the Packers on Monday to acquire four-time NFL MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers, according to multiple reports, in a franchise-altering move.” according to the NY post

In recent weeks, there has been talk about the possibility of Aaron Rodgers joining the San Francisco 49ers, should negotiations between the Jets and Packers not work out. WFAN host, Craig Carton, previously mentioned the discussion of possible compensation being “multiple third-round picks in this draft, and a first-round draft pick in next year’s draft.”

Former Giants running back, Tiki Barber, echoed a similar sentiment on his show “Tiki & Tierney” on Wednesday. Barber said that the Rodgers to 49ers rumors have “some validity.” He also speculated that the 49ers could go all-in on Rodgers and mortgage their future because they are not worried about losing their jobs.

It’s worth noting that the 49ers do not have a first or second-round pick in this year’s draft, having sent their 2023 first-round selection to the Dolphins two years ago as part of a package to move up in the 2021 NFL Draft. However, they do own three third-round picks, beginning with the No. 99 overall selection.

As for Rodgers, he remains a member of the Packers despite stating in March how he intends to play for the Jets in 2023. Both New York and Green Bay have yet to hammer out a deal to send the four-time league MVP to the East Coast.

Clear Thoughts:

The recent rumors of Aaron Rodgers potentially joining the San Francisco 49ers are intriguing. It’s clear that the 49ers are a team that is not afraid to make bold moves, having traded up to select Trey Lance in the 2021 NFL Draft. However, the idea of them mortgaging their future to acquire Rodgers is concerning.

Rodgers is undoubtedly one of the best quarterbacks in the league, but he is also 39 years old. It’s unclear how much longer he will be able to perform at a high level. Additionally, if the 49ers were to trade away multiple high draft picks, it could hinder their ability to build a sustainable roster in the long term.

The idea of the Jets being left out in the cold is not necessarily accurate. The Jets have a young quarterback in Zach Wilson, who they believe has the potential to be a franchise player. While Rodgers would undoubtedly improve the team in the short term, it’s unclear how much value he would provide in the long term.

Ultimately, while the idea of Rodgers joining the 49ers is intriguing, it’s important for the team to consider the long-term ramifications of such a move. It’s also worth noting that Rodgers has stated his intention to play for the Jets in 2023, so any potential trade would require the cooperation of both the Packers and Rodgers himself.
