Belgium has launched an inquiry into the 2025 detention of Lois McLatchie Miller and “Billboard” Chris Elston, a full year after the incident occurred in Brussels. The two activists, from Britain and Canada, were speaking out on gender topics when a crowd formed, prompting them to call police for help.
When police arrived, both Miller and Elston were arrested, strip-searched, and held for four hours, despite being the ones requesting assistance. The authorities have not clarified whether the investigation aims to examine the officers’ conduct or actions of the activists themselves.
“Opening up a criminal investigation into what happened is a major development,” Miller said.
She continued, “It’s clear by any measure that our right to free speech was violated when we were put in jail cells for speaking about puberty blockers.” Miller and Elston have spent a year pursuing an apology and compensation from Belgium over what they call an unlawful detention.
The outcome of this investigation could hint at a broader change in Europe’s stance on free expression. American officials continue to warn that freedom of speech may be threatened across the continent.
“Free speech, I fear, is in retreat,” Vice President JD Vance said last year.
He pointed to Brussels, where he claimed EU leaders were seeking to silence citizens online during unrest and referenced police crackdowns on so-called hateful or anti-feminist speech. The vice president voiced confidence that European democracies are “substantially less brittle than many people apparently fear.”
Elston, a frequent target of hostility for his outspoken activism, said, “We should be able to speak freely about one of the greatest medical scandals in modern history.” He added, “Children are being maimed, chemically casterated, and sterilized for an ideology which teaches they were born wrong.”
Elston has previously experienced violence and legal troubles for his advocacy in other countries, including Canada and Australia.
Following his Belgian arrest, Elston formed a nonprofit to combat “medical malpractice of child transition” and to defend freedom of speech around the world.
“We’re formalizing a grassroots movement to educate, activate, and equip people to protect children,” Elston said.
He also stated, “We will always endeavor to follow the law, while at the same time challenge abuses of authority.”
