A cherished television and film star from the 1980s surprised fans this week when she appeared in a photo alongside singer Carnie Wilson, marking a rare public sighting more than two decades after her retirement from Hollywood.

Kristy McNichol, 63, was photographed with the 58-year-old Wilson Philips singer, who shared the encounter on social media. Wilson expressed genuine admiration for the former actress who shaped her childhood memories.

“Totally fangirling!!!” Wilson wrote in her post.

“Kris (Kristy McNichol) was a part of my youth. I adored her in her movies… Especially Little Darlings and The End.”

Wilson told McNichol how meaningful her work had been to her and her close friend Tiffany Miller. The five-time Grammy Award nominee revealed they had recently been discussing McNichol and her enduring impact on their generation.

“What a gracious sweetie,” Wilson added with heart emojis.

“She sure is loved.”

In the photograph, McNichol wore a navy blue and red fleece jacket over a white T-shirt with gold earrings. Wilson was dressed in a black top featuring a colorful leaf pattern and a black beanie. Both women smiled warmly as they posed together for the camera.

McNichol’s career began in childhood, when she appeared in commercials and made guest appearances on popular television shows including “Starsky & Hutch,” “CHiPs,” and “The Love Boat.” Her first regular role came in the CBS drama “Apple’s Way,” which ran from 1974 to 1975.

The actress achieved her breakthrough at age 14 in 1976 when she was cast as Letitia “Buddy” Lawrence in the ABC drama series “Family.” The role earned her two Primetime Emmy Awards and established her as one of television’s most popular teen stars of that era.

McNichol transitioned to film in 1977, starring in the 1978 black comedy “The End” with Burt Reynolds and Sally Field. She garnered critical praise for her performance as Angel Bright in the 1980 teen comedy-drama “Little Darlings” alongside Tatum O’Neal, Matt Dillon, and Armand Assante.

Her film career flourished with leading roles in “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia” (1980) and “Only When I Laugh” (1981), the latter earning her a Golden Globe nomination for best supporting actress. She continued with starring parts in “The Pirate Movie” (1982), “Dream Lover” (1986), and “You Can’t Hurry Love” (1988).

In 1986, McNichol returned to television with a prominent role on the sitcom “Empty Nest,” a spin-off of “The Golden Girls.” She departed the show in 1992, making her final on-screen appearance in the 1995 season finale.

In 2001, McNichol publicly announced her retirement from acting after 24 years in the entertainment industry.

“A lot of people have wondered what I’ve been up to,” she stated at the time.

“I retired from my career after 24 years.”

“My feeling was that it was time to play my biggest part – myself! I must say that it has been the best thing that ever happened to me. So many fans are disappointed that I’m not currently acting; however, some may not realize that the process I’m in at this time is necessary and vital for my personal happiness and well-being.”

Since leaving Hollywood, McNichol has maintained a deliberately private life. During a rare 2014 interview, she explained her decision to step away from the spotlight to explore other aspects of life.

“I was on the big stage between ages 8 and 30,” McNichol said.

“I left show business for a variety of reasons, but a big one was my interest in learning what else there is in life.”

“This phase of my life is so good. My home life is happy and serene. I love singing. I also enjoy traveling and seeing the world. One of my favorite stops is Hawaii. I like everything about it and may eventually move there part-time.”

When asked about the possibility of returning to acting, McNichol kept the door open.

“Never say never,” she said.
