“The visit will be an opportunity to recognise the shared history of our two nations; the breadth of the economic, security and cultural relationship that has developed since then; and the deep people-to-people connections which unite communities,” a U.K. Embassy press release stated.

The visit represents the first time a British monarch has set foot on American soil since the late Queen Elizabeth visited in 2007 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Jamestown settlement. That 18-year gap underscores the significance of this diplomatic engagement.

The royal visit nearly faced cancellation following a shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night. President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, First Lady Melania Trump, and other senior officials were evacuated from the Washington Hilton Hotel ballroom after a gunman exchanged fire with Secret Service agents.

The suspect, 31-year-old Cole Allen of Torrance, California, shot a Secret Service officer in his ballistic vest before being subdued and taken into custody. The officer was released from the hospital Sunday and is expected to make a full recovery. Allen faces federal charges including assaulting a federal officer and using a firearm during a crime of violence.

After consultations across the Atlantic, Buckingham Palace confirmed the trip would proceed as scheduled.

“Following discussions on both sides of the Atlantic through the day, and acting on advice of Government, we can confirm the State Visit by Their Majesties will proceed as planned,” a palace spokesperson said.

“The King and Queen are most grateful to all those who have worked at pace to ensure this remains the case and are looking forward to the Visit getting underway tomorrow.”

A palace source revealed that Charles and Camilla reached out privately to President Trump and the First Lady “to express their sympathies with all those affected on the night and their gratitude to the security services who prevented further injury.”

The visit begins Monday, April 27, with a White House reception. President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will greet the royal couple for a private tea, followed by a ceremonial military review and bilateral meetings. While the King and President conduct diplomatic discussions, Queen Camilla and the First Lady will hold their own separate meeting.

The highlight of the Washington portion of the visit will be King Charles’s address to a joint session of Congress. This historic moment will mark only the second time a British monarch has delivered such an address, following Queen Elizabeth II’s 1991 speech at the Capitol.

The day will conclude with a state dinner at the White House hosted by President Trump and the First Lady. Before departing Washington, the King and Queen will lay a wreath and flowers “in honour of the fallen,” recognizing the military alliance between the United States and the United Kingdom.

President Trump expressed enthusiasm for the visit during an interview with the BBC.

“King Charles is a fantastic man,” Trump said, affirming that he can “absolutely” see the two countries remaining lasting allies.

From Washington, the royal couple will travel to New York, where they will engage in activities reflecting the modern economic and cultural ties between the two nations. A particularly poignant moment will come when they visit first responders and families of victims from the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, marking the 25th anniversary of that tragic day.

Their New York itinerary also includes a visit to an organization teaching children affected by food insecurity about sustainable farming, an event for The Queen’s Reading Room, and meetings with business and financial leaders representing the economic partnership driving growth in both countries.

The visit will conclude with a reception celebrating The King’s Trust and its work shaping young lives across America, while showcasing the cultural connections between the United States and the United Kingdom, including Britain’s world-leading creative industries.

The final leg of the journey takes Charles and Camilla to Virginia, where they will meet with local community organizations, attend performances by Appalachian groups with historical ties to the region, and participate in a block party celebrating America’s 250th birthday.

King Charles will visit one of America’s national parks to learn about environmental protection programs, while Queen Camilla will tour a farm to explore America’s horse racing industry and its connections to British equestrian traditions.

This state visit follows President Trump and First Lady Melania’s trip to the United Kingdom in September 2025, making Trump the first elected political leader to receive two U.K. state visit invitations. His first state visit occurred in June 2019 during his initial term as president, hosted by Queen Elizabeth II.
