A former NFL player who once commanded a first-round draft selection now faces murder charges in Ohio, according to court records. Darron Lee, who played linebacker for both the New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs, was indicted by a grand jury on the serious criminal charge.

The 30-year-old former Ohio State standout initially faced both murder and tampering with evidence charges. However, prosecutors have made the strategic decision to dismiss the evidence tampering charge in order to concentrate their resources on prosecuting the murder allegation, which carries far more severe penalties.

Lee was selected 20th overall in the 2016 NFL Draft by the New York Jets after a standout college career with the Ohio State Buckeyes. He spent three seasons with the Jets before being traded to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2019. His professional football career ended after the 2019 season.

During his time at Ohio State, Lee was known as a dynamic playmaker who helped the Buckeyes win the 2014 National Championship. He was a two-time All-Big Ten selection and entered the NFL draft as one of the top linebacker prospects in his class.

The specifics of the murder case have not been fully disclosed by law enforcement officials at this time. Court documents indicate the grand jury found sufficient evidence to move forward with formal charges against the former athlete.

This case represents another troubling example of professional athletes facing serious criminal allegations after their playing careers end. The transition from professional sports to civilian life has proven challenging for numerous former players across all major sports leagues.

Lee’s legal team has not yet issued a public statement regarding the indictment. The former linebacker is expected to face arraignment in the coming weeks, where he will enter a formal plea to the murder charge.

The case will proceed through the Ohio court system with pretrial hearings likely to be scheduled in the months ahead. If convicted of murder, Lee could face a lengthy prison sentence under Ohio state law.
