The Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) described the incident as “high-stakes” and said it began when two suspects fleeing local law enforcement crashed through a gate at the sprawling military base. The brazen breach raised immediate concerns about installation security and the safety of military personnel and families living on base.

After crashing through the gate, the suspects abandoned their vehicle in a military housing area and fled on foot, according to NCIS. The vehicle’s location in a residential zone created additional urgency for the search operation.

Base officials implemented a temporary shelter-in-place order as authorities worked to secure the installation and protect residents. Military families were instructed to remain indoors while the manhunt was underway.

NCIS launched a multi-agency search involving approximately 30 personnel to locate the suspects. The operation demonstrated the kind of interagency cooperation essential for protecting military installations from threats.

For six hours, military and law enforcement personnel searched the base using real-time intelligence and tracking support from the NCIS Multiple Threat Alert Center and Regional Enforcement Action Capabilities Team. The coordinated effort involved ground searches and intelligence analysis to track the suspects’ movements.

Authorities said both suspects were ultimately taken into custody without incident. The peaceful resolution prevented any potential violence or harm to base residents and personnel.

Investigators later discovered approximately 51 kilograms — more than 112 pounds — of cocaine and fentanyl inside the suspects’ vehicle, according to NCIS. The massive drug haul underscores the ongoing crisis at America’s southern border and the flood of deadly narcotics entering our communities.

Camp Pendleton, located in San Diego County near the Mexican border, is one of the largest Marine Corps bases in the country and home to thousands of active-duty personnel and their families.
