A Prince George’s County bank robbery attempt took an unusual turn when the suspect allegedly used a stolen kitten as part of his scheme. The bizarre incident unfolded at a PNC Bank in Beltsville, Maryland, where law enforcement arrested a man who had just moments earlier taken a 3-month-old kitten from a nearby pet store.

According to police and local cat rescue organization Beltsville Community Cats, the suspect stole the black-and-white tuxedo kitten named Magnolia from Pet Supplies Plus on Baltimore Avenue. Security camera footage shows a man wearing a light-colored T-shirt and black beanie entering the pet store before running out seconds later carrying the kitten.

Witnesses reported the man ran directly to the PNC Bank located in the same shopping center. Once inside the bank, the suspect walked up to an employee holding Magnolia.

“Can you hold this?”

After handing off the kitten, the man allegedly gave a teller a note demanding cash. Prince George’s County police responded to the scene and took the suspect into custody before he could leave with any money.

Stephanie Stullich with Beltsville Community Cats received a frantic phone call around 10:30 a.m. from pet store employees reporting Magnolia had been taken from the adoption area.

“I immediately saw all of these police cars, and I thought, ‘Wow, that’s a heck of a response for a stolen cat,’ But then I realized they all were going down to the bank.”

Police later informed Stullich about the suspect’s unusual method of operation. The kitten apparently bonded with the bank manager during the ordeal and was recovered safely.

Aaron Kurkowski, manager of Pet Supplies Plus, told local media that the suspect had visited the store nearly every day for the past couple of weeks and consistently went straight to Magnolia’s location.

“He just went right to her and ran right on out.”

Beltsville Community Cats later posted on Facebook that Magnolia’s brief “life of crime” was over. The rescue organization described the 3-month-old as a “true purr machine” who is affectionate, playful, and loves cuddles and adventures. Because of her social and energetic personality, the group recommends she be adopted into a home with another young, playful cat.

The robbery was unsuccessful, demonstrating that even the most creative criminal schemes cannot overcome basic law enforcement response. The incident serves as another example of the unpredictable nature of criminal behavior and the dedication of local police departments to protecting their communities.

Magnolia remains available for adoption through Beltsville Community Cats. Stullich summarized the adoption requirement succinctly.

“She’s looking for a law-abiding citizen with a lot of love in their heart.”
