  • Pope Leo XIV declared the death penalty inadmissible in a post on X marking World Day Against the Death Penalty.
  • The Vatican reiterated its position that capital punishment violates human dignity and is incompatible with Catholic teaching.
  • The U.S. military plans to carry out the first firing-squad execution since 1945 on December 3 at Fort Hood.

Pope Leo XIV used his platform on social media to restate the Catholic Church’s stance against capital punishment. The American-born pontiff emphasized that modern detention systems protect the public without ending the possibility of redemption for the guilty.

“The death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person. The common good can be safeguarded and the requirements of justice can be met without recourse to capital punishment: effective systems of detention have been developed that protect citizens while at the same time do not completely deprive those who are guilty of the possibility of redemption,” Pope Leo XIV wrote on X.

“#NoDeathPenalty,” he added.

The statement comes as the Pentagon prepares to execute former Army psychiatrist Nidal Malik Hasan by firing squad for the 2009 Fort Hood massacre that left 13 dead and 32 wounded. President Trump has not yet ruled on whether the execution will be livestreamed.

Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin condemned the idea of broadcasting an execution, calling it unacceptable to turn death into a spectacle. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops also urged reconsideration of the plan, describing it as a promotion of a culture of death.

“Public executions are what oppressive dictatorships like Iran and Afghanistan do. It should not be happening in America,” Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., said.

Traditional Catholic teaching has long recognized that governments have a duty to protect citizens while still preserving the dignity of every human life. The Church’s updated position maintains that effective incarceration fulfills justice without resorting to the death penalty.
