Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton delivered a hard-hitting wrestling clinic at WrestleMania 42 on Saturday night in Las Vegas, though the spectacle was nearly overshadowed by repeated interference from an unwelcome presence.

Pat McAfee entered the ring with Orton to begin the match. The ESPN commentator received some of the loudest boos of the night at Allegiant Stadium, clearly demonstrating the WWE Universe’s disapproval of his involvement in the marquee championship bout.

McAfee attacked Rhodes with a microphone before the opening bell even rang. Once Rhodes recovered, he pushed Orton aside and turned his attention to McAfee, clearing off the announce table and placing the former NFL player on it.

Rhodes allowed country music star Jelly Roll to hit an elbow drop onto McAfee. The crowd jeered as McAfee was carried out of the arena on a stretcher.

With the distraction finally removed, the match truly began. It moved at a slow but calculated pace, with Rhodes methodically targeting Orton’s injured back throughout the contest.

The crowd watched intently as Rhodes and Orton traded blows, each trying to gain advantage. The measured approach showcased the veteran ring psychology both men have mastered over their decorated careers.

The intensity escalated when Rhodes pushed Orton into the ring post outside the squared circle. Orton was busted open, blood streaming down his face as the match entered its most brutal phase.

Rhodes attempted to steal Orton’s finishing move and deliver an RKO, but it was countered. Orton then turned the tables, hitting “The American Nightmare” with his own signature move, the Cross Rhodes.

Moments later, Rhodes finally connected with an RKO on Orton. But the legendary veteran kicked out.

Orton responded with an RKO of his own. He could sense his 15th WWE championship within reach, but Rhodes kicked out at two.

Orton hit Rhodes with another devastating RKO. The match continued to escalate when referee Charles Robinson was accidentally struck with an RKO, leaving the ring without an official.

Orton attempted a low blow reminiscent of McAfee’s attack on him during SmackDown weeks earlier. Rhodes countered and kicked Orton in the groin instead.

Rhodes climbed to the top rope when Orton came out of nowhere with yet another RKO. With no referee to count the pin, McAfee made a miraculous recovery from his earlier “injury.”

McAfee sprinted to the ring and counted for Orton, but Rhodes kicked out at two. The interference drew massive heat from the Vegas crowd.

McAfee tried to direct Orton to continue his assault, but “The Viper” had had enough of the outside meddling. Orton nailed McAfee with a thunderous RKO, finally eliminating him from the equation.

Rhodes capitalized on Orton’s momentary distraction. He hit the Cross Rhodes and pinned Orton for the three-count, retaining the Undisputed WWE Championship.

The exhausted and bloodied competitors caught their breath in the ring, appearing to show mutual respect after their grueling battle. But Orton was far from finished with his championship pursuit.

In a shocking turn, Orton grabbed the championship belt from Rhodes and struck him with it. The attack stunned the Allegiant Stadium crowd.

Orton ended Night 1 of WrestleMania 42 with a devastating punt kick to Rhodes’ head, leaving the champion laid out in the center of the ring. The brutal finale sent a clear message that this rivalry is nowhere near over.
