Clear Facts

  • President Donald Trump’s foreign beef imports have angered South Dakota ranchers who now question Senator Mike Rounds reelection prospects.
  • South Dakota cattle producers say the policy is creating economic pressure on local family ranches in a state that gave Trump nearly 30 points in 2024.
  • Rounds faces an independent challenger in Brian Bengs while defending his Senate seat in the upcoming election cycle.

South Dakota ranchers are speaking out against the foreign beef import policy under President Donald Trump, claiming it is hurting their bottom line and creating political trouble for Republican Senator Mike Rounds.

Local cattle producers told the Daily Caller News Foundation that the influx of imported beef is undercutting domestic prices and threatening the viability of family ranches across the state.

“This policy is putting our livelihoods at risk,” one rancher stated.

“We expected protection for American agriculture, not competition from overseas producers.”

Rounds, who is seeking reelection in a state that strongly supported President Trump in 2024, now finds himself navigating criticism from the very voters who have traditionally formed the backbone of his support.

The senator’s campaign is reportedly struggling to maintain momentum as ranchers express frustration over the economic impact of the import policy.

“We’re watching our margins shrink while foreign beef floods the market,” another producer said.

“Senator Rounds needs to stand up for South Dakota cattlemen if he wants our votes.”
