The shooting unfolded at the TD Salsa on St. Clair Festival, the city’s largest Latin cultural event, which was marking its 22nd year in the Hillcrest Village neighborhood.

The Toronto Police Service received reports of shots fired at St. Clair Avenue West and Arlington Avenue at 8:12 p.m. local time. Officers arriving on scene discovered what they described as an active shooter situation with multiple victims.

First responders found five people suffering from gunshot wounds across the festival grounds. Two victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while the three injured were transported to area hospitals. The condition of the surviving victims has not been disclosed.

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and authorities have not confirmed whether any suspects are in custody. Police have not released information about potential suspects or whether the shooting was targeted or random.

In the immediate aftermath of the violence, the Toronto Transit Commission took the unusual step of suspending service at the nearby St. Clair West station on Line 1 Yonge-University. Officials cited a “security incident” as the reason for the temporary closure. Regular transit service has since been restored.

Police cordoned off a large section of the festival area and urged the public to avoid the vicinity. Authorities directed residents and festival-goers to comply with all instructions from officers at the scene as the investigation unfolded.

The TD Salsa on St. Clair Festival draws thousands of attendees annually to celebrate Latin American culture through music, dance, food, and community activities. The event has been a fixture in Toronto’s Midtown area for more than two decades.
