The suspect, Jose Carranza-Escobar, was confronted by neighbors at Pioneer Park late Friday night. Azusa Police Department Capt. Robert Landeros emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating,
“This was intentional.”

He further explained that the neighbors’ intervention prevented Carranza-Escobar from igniting another fire.

Video footage captured an Azusa officer handcuffing Carranza-Escobar near a brush fire, which was swiftly extinguished by county firefighters. The 39-year-old, described as “a transient,” admitted to starting the fire and is now facing arson charges.

The arrest occurs amid ongoing efforts by firefighters to control multiple wildfires in Los Angeles County, which have already resulted in at least 24 fatalities and extensive property damage. Authorities, including the district attorney’s office, are expected to provide further updates on this case and other fire-related incidents.

Capt. Landeros highlighted the collaborative efforts of various agencies, including the county sheriff’s office and the California National Guard, in adopting a “zero-tolerance” stance against arson.
“Everybody’s out there,” he remarked.
“We’re watching. Even our citizens are.”

The foothills surrounding Azusa, known for their fire risk and homeless encampments, have previously been sites of fire outbreaks.
“We’re constantly conducting enforcement operations in that area,” Landeros noted, acknowledging the residents’ heightened anxiety due to the fires.

With strong winds forecasted to return, there is a looming threat that existing fires could intensify. These winds not only fan flames but also pose risks by toppling trees and branches that can ignite.

In a statement, Landeros urged the community to stay vigilant:
“Azusa PD urges everyone to remain alert as fires continue to affect the county. We must be cautious of individuals who may enter our community with the intent to start fires.”

This incident follows another recent event where Los Angeles residents intervened to stop a homeless man carrying a blowtorch. Although he was detained, authorities lacked sufficient evidence to press arson charges.
