San Diego’s Bold Move on Immigration Sparks Debate

Clear Facts

  • The San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted 3-1 to implement a policy that prevents the sheriff’s department from notifying ICE about illegal immigrants who have committed violent crimes.
  • The policy requires a judge’s order for ICE to receive assistance from the county, going beyond existing California state law.
  • San Diego County Sheriff Kelly A. Martinez stated that the Sheriff’s Office will not change its practices based on the new policy, emphasizing the independent authority of the Sheriff’s Office.

In a controversial move, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors has voted to transform the county into a “super sanctuary” jurisdiction. This decision, passed with a 3-1 vote, effectively blocks the sheriff’s department from notifying Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) about illegal immigrants involved in violent criminal activities.

This new policy surpasses the existing California state law by mandating a judge’s order for any collaboration with ICE regarding the transfer of illegal immigrants convicted of violent offenses.

San Diego County Sheriff Kelly A. Martinez was quick to respond to the board’s decision.

“The Sheriff’s Office will not change its practices based on the Board resolution and policy that was passed at today’s meeting,” Sheriff Martinez asserted.

She further clarified that the Board of Supervisors does not have the authority to dictate policies for the Sheriff’s Office, which operates independently.

Supervisor Jim Desmond, the sole dissenting vote, expressed his concerns about the policy.

“I think this policy goes beyond California’s existing sanctuary laws by adding an additional layer of bureaucracy that hinders local law enforcement from directly notifying ICE about illegal immigrants who are currently in our jails,” he stated.

Desmond highlighted the severity of the crimes committed by the illegal immigrants affected by this policy, including offenses such as child abuse, driving under the influence, and more severe crimes like rape and kidnapping.

He warned that the policy would legally prohibit San Diego County from coordinating with ICE, effectively shielding offenders from deportation.

Desmond criticized the board’s decision as a betrayal of public safety, emphasizing that it not only exceeds California’s sanctuary laws but also endangers communities by protecting illegal immigrant criminals from deportation.

Desmond vowed to fight against the policy, stating, “I have already been in contact with the incoming Administration and will fight relentlessly to undo this disastrous policy and ensure that illegal immigrant criminals are removed from our neighborhoods.”

The decision has sparked a heated debate, raising questions about the balance between state and local authority and the implications for public safety.

I think this could help Trump by providing him a place to send all the criminal illegal aliens while they wait deportation. Then the folks of San Diego can deal with all the criminals, and I wonder how long the citizens will put up with this BS and decide it is time to deport them.

Give all the illegals the home addresses of the three board members and tell them to go there for free food and a place to sleep and hang out in the daytime.

I object to the immigration of illegals that have committed no crimes against anyone but as for the criminals in prison, they should be gotten rid of unless they are awaiting the death penalty.
Donald is creating intern camps similar to germany for the jews in world war 2. Those I severely disagree with. As with Germany, they will be in the middle of nowhere and supervision to make sure they are well cared for will be lacking. Under watch by Donalds lackey cops they can be totally abused and neglected and no one will be there to speak for them.
This is not germany. Lets not repeat the past!!!!!

Let’s not be concerned about San Diego residents. They must approve of their Board of Supervisors philosophy because they elected them. Color San Diego very very BLUE.

BOARD OF SUPERVIOSRS ARE NOT A COURT OF LAW AND AND THERFORE CANNOT DICTATE TO THE POLICE DEPARTMENT WHAT THEY MUST DO. IF THEY ARE ILLEGAL, THEY ARE BREAKING THE LAW! KEEP IN MIND, IF AN ILLEGAL ATTACKS A BOARD OF SUPERVIOSR MEMBER…..THEY WILL BE THE FIRST ONES SCREAMING

I live in New Mexico and I would trade all of our homeless for an equal number of your unregistered immigrants. I lived in Texas (on the border) for almost 20 years and never had a problem. Since I moved to NM, I live with a gun in almost ever room and 3 guard dogs just to keep the homeless people from stealing and trespassing. These are homeless by choice, there are plenty of jobs and housing available. The illegals in Texas were not only willing to work, they were willing to work hard and appreciated a job.
