President Joe Biden shared a personal milestone amid the chaos of wildfires in Los Angeles, California. While being briefed on the situation at the Santa Monica Fire Station, he revealed, “I am a great-grandfather as of today,” announcing the birth of his first great-grandchild.

Biden had arrived in Los Angeles with plans to visit the Coachella Valley and designate two new national monuments. However, the intensifying winds and wildfires forced a change in schedule, keeping the 82-year-old president in town.

During the briefing, California Governor Gavin Newsom expressed his appreciation for Biden’s involvement, stating, “It’s impossible to express the level of appreciation and cooperation we received at the White House and from this administration.”

Newsom further added, “So on behalf on all of us, Mr. President, thank you for being here, not just today — thank you for being here since the minute of this incident.”

As Biden addressed the severity of the wildfires, he recalled a personal scare, “It is astounding what is happening,” noting that he once thought his son’s home was in danger due to the fires.

He concluded his remarks on a lighter note, correcting himself about the gender of the newborn, “A 10 pound baby girl … baby boy. So I will remember this day.”

The president’s announcement was met with congratulations from those present, and shortly after, White House staff ushered the press out before any questions could be posed.

Biden disclosed that Naomi Biden, the new mother, had a scheduled c-section. Prior to the cancellation of his plans, Biden was expected to return to the White House on Wednesday afternoon.

Earlier that morning, Biden and the First Lady visited Cedars Sinai Hospital, where they joined Hunter Biden, Naomi’s father, his wife Melissa, and their son Beau.

First Lady Jill Biden confirmed the baby’s gender in an Instagram post, clarifying that the child is indeed a boy.

Despite the personal joy, Biden remained focused on the crisis at hand, asserting, “We’re doing anything and everything and as long as it takes to contain these fires … to make sure you get back to normal. It’s going to be a hell of a long way. It’s going to take time.”
