In a shocking turn of events, former Interim Commissioner of the New York City Police Department (NYPD), Thomas Donlon, has reportedly taken legal action against Mayor Eric Adams.
Donlon’s federal racketeering lawsuit accuses Adams of operating the NYPD like a “criminal enterprise.” The lawsuit names Adams alongside eight other current or former top NYPD officials, including Chief of Department John Chell and Deputy Mayor Kaz Daughtry.
According to Donlon, Adams and his inner circle engaged in promoting unqualified individuals, concealing misconduct, and retaliating against those who attempted to expose corruption within the department.
The lawsuit paints a grim picture of the NYPD, describing it as “criminal at its core.”
Kayla Mamelak Altus, a spokesperson for New York City Hall, dismissed these allegations as “baseless.” She characterized Donlon as a “disgruntled former employee” who failed to demonstrate effectiveness when given the chance to lead the NYPD.
During his brief tenure, Donlon claims to have uncovered “systemic corruption and criminal conduct” facilitated by Adams and executed by the mayor’s close associates.
The lawsuit further alleges that this corruption resulted in a “massive, unlawful transfer of public wealth” through mechanisms like pension boosts and undeserved raises.
One particularly alarming claim involves Tarik Sheppard, a former NYPD spokesperson, who allegedly used Donlon’s signature without authorization to secure a raise and promotion.
When confronted, Sheppard reportedly threatened Donlon’s life. Following a vehicular accident involving Donlon’s wife, Sheppard allegedly retaliated by leaking personal information about Donlon’s family to the media.
The lawsuit also accuses NYPD leadership of obstructing internal investigations initiated by Donlon and refusing to cooperate with federal probes.
It claims that officers with connections to Adams’ allies received promotions in exchange for favors.
Donlon, who has a background with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and experience in handling terrorism cases, is seeking unspecified damages.
He is also advocating for federal oversight of the NYPD, arguing that his professional reputation was “deliberately destroyed.”
Mayor Adams had initially brought Donlon into the NYPD in the fall of 2024, hoping to stabilize the department amidst ongoing turmoil and federal investigations. However, Donlon resigned in less than a month after federal agents reportedly searched his home for documents unrelated to his NYPD role.
