Kroger’s Guacamole and Salsa Among Recalled Products as Listeria Fears Grow Nationwide

A significant Listeria recall is evolving. Initially impacting whole cucumbers and bagged salad products, the recall has now extended to a range of pre-packaged produce, with the possibility of guacamole and salsa sold at Kroger being affected.

The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a recall notice from JFE Franchising, Inc. on July 25. The company is recalling a limited number of Snowfruit products due to potential health risks.

The recall includes items sold in plastic clam shell containers, such as Snowfruit’s Guacamole Chunky Medium, Guacamole Chunky Mild, Guacamole Blender Mild, Salsa Medium, Salsa Mild, Pico de Gallo Classic Hot, and Guacamole & Pico de Gallo Combo, along with other packaged vegetables and herbs.

The affected products were packaged from July 6 to July 19, and were available at various Kroger retail stores in Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia, and Jay C Food retail stores in Indiana.

Consumers are advised not to consume the recalled Snowfruit products. Instead, they should return the products to the place of purchase for a full refund or dispose of them. JFE Franchising, Inc. has committed to taking all necessary measures to fully address this situation, prioritizing consumer safety and wellbeing.

This latest recall is linked to an ongoing recall initiated by Wiers Farm, Inc., which has been recalling produce from retailers such as Kroger, Walmart, Aldi, Save-a-Lot, and Shop N Save since July 12. The extensive recall followed routine sampling by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) that revealed potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

While no illnesses or consumer complaints related to this outbreak have been reported to date, consumers are advised to be aware that Listeriosis, an infection caused by Listeria, can be fatal. Current data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates another ongoing Listeria outbreak has caused illness in 34 people, with two reported fatalities.

Listeriosis is especially likely to affect pregnant women and their newborns, adults aged 65 or older, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms can range widely depending on the severity of the illness, and they may last from days to weeks.

Consumers who have consumed the affected product(s) and are experiencing symptoms like fever, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal issues should seek medical attention.
