House Speaker Mike Johnson recently defended the Medicaid reforms included in the House’s newly passed tax and spending bill. He clarified that the bill, which has been described as “one big, beautiful bill,” does not cut Medicaid but instead implements “important and heroic” reforms.

The bill, passed by a slim margin of 215-214-1, fulfills several of President Donald Trump’s promises, including making the 2017 tax cuts permanent and ending taxes on tips and overtime pay. Johnson explained that the reforms target “fraud, waste and abuse” within Medicaid to ensure it remains available for those who truly need it.

“There are no Medicaid cuts in the big beautiful bill. We’re not cutting Medicaid,” Johnson stated. He further elaborated that the goal is to preserve the program for vulnerable groups such as young, single pregnant women, the disabled, and the elderly.

A significant aspect of the bill is the introduction of work requirements for some childless, able-bodied adults on Medicaid, which are set to be implemented by the end of 2026. Johnson highlighted the importance of these requirements, noting that they are designed to prevent able-bodied individuals from draining resources meant for those in genuine need.

“This will not affect rural hospitals and there’s flexibility built into this,” Johnson assured. He mentioned that approximately 7.6 million people could be impacted, including 1.4 million illegal immigrants.

Johnson emphasized the necessity of work requirements, stating, “If you are able to work and not and riding the public wagon, you need to pull it.” He explained that the legislation would require just 20 hours of work per week, which could include volunteering or participating in job training programs.

Senate Republicans are now working to advance the bill to President Trump’s desk by July 4, aiming to solidify these reforms and ensure the sustainability of Medicaid for future generations.
